Late free throws lift Millbrook past Wakefield


Two late free throws from senior guard Isaiah Lewis allowed Millbrook to remain undefeated, knocking off Wakefield in non-conference action on Wednesday night, 79-77.

Despite missing the last two days of school due to a snowstorm, both offenses warmed up quickly. Wakefield got eight points from Trae Smith and seven points from Brenon Rogers as it took a 23-22 lead in the opening quarter.

Millbrook was led Jalen McCoy's six points in the first quarter. Sam Hood and Phillip Burwell each scored four points in the opening quarter.

The Wildcats went on a run in the second quarter though, taking a halftime lead behind seven points from both Burwell and Jai McRae.A five-point performance by Smith kept Wakefield close, but Millbrook led 42-38 at halftime.

Just like the first half, the game was back and forth in the second half.

Millbrook had its smallest offensive output of the game in the third quarter, scoring just 15 points. The Wildcats were led by Isaiah Lewis' five points in the quarter, but that opened the door for Wakefield.

Smith added seven more points for Wakefield in the third quarter as the Wolverines took a 58-57 lead into the final quarter of play.

Millbrook's fourth quarter run gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the game at eight points. Lewis scored 10 of Millbrook's 22 points in the fourth quarter, eight of which came from the free throw line.

Wakefield climbed back after trailing by eight though and took a lead late in the quarter. As the teams found themselves tied at 77-77, Lewis collected an offensive rebound and was fouled by the Wolverines with 1.5 seconds left. He hit the first free throw to give Millbrook a 78-77 lead, then Wakefield called a timeout. Despite the timeout, Lewis hit his second free throw and Millbrook claimed the two-point win to remain undefeated.

Lewis led the Wildcats in scoring with 19 points on Wednesday night. Burwell scored 13 points for Millbrook, McCoy posted 12 points and McRae scored 11 points.

Smith led all scorers in the game with 25 points. Rogers posted 18 points and Elijah Shabazz scored 15 points for Wakefield.
